Do kids really need a cell phone?  Need is such a strong word.  Probably not, but it sure is nice to have piece of mind knowing that you can contact them anytime, anywhere and vice versa.  Several situations come to mind, for example:  Do you ever drop your child off at Dance class, Football practice, guitar lessons, art, tutoring etc?  (Or have you wanted to drop them off but don't feel comfortable quite yet)  If for any reason you need to contact them you can!  What if you could call them up and tell them...

"Johnny, I'm stuck in traffic and am going to be a few minutes late."

"Katie, meet me at the corner, we're running late for our next appointment."

PARENTAL CONTROLS

For safety reasons, I recommend going with a cell phone for kids that offers parental controls.  kajeet is a company that's won 4 parental awards over the years. They are no contract service with FREE parental controls on every plan.  Many other companies are now offering parental controls but they charge extra fees.

With kajeet, you can control inbound and outbound calls easily.  You could program just mom, dad and grandma's phone numbers if you want!  Set up time restrictions for your child.  For example, you can restrict phone use during school time hours or after bedtime. (You can always add exceptions to the rule allowing certain numbers access at all times regardless of the time restrictions previously set up.) 911 always works, so no worries there.

COST

kajeet is very reasonable and affordable for nearly every household.  The basic plan (what I consider to be the  "Emergency Backpack" phone plan) is just $4.99 a month.  For the same price as a meal at McDonald's you can have piece of mind!  The Unlimited Talk/Text plan is $50.  My favorite plan is the Unlimited Text/60 talk for $14.99 a month! Plus, don't forget kajeet is NO CONTRACT, if you are unhappy with the service, your kid loses his phone or gets grounded from the cell phone you are not stuck paying for something you aren't using.  This is priceless.  Trust me, as a parent with a teenage son I've been in those shoes before. Not anymore- now that we have kajeet.

SEXTING 
If your child has an issue with another kid sending harassing texts or calls, simply log into your kajeet account and block their phone number!  Problem solved.

GPS SERVICE

kajeet offers GPS service. Find your child or your child's phone anytime. You can choose to sign up for it monthly or pay for it on a per-use basis.  (I love having that option!)  You can set up a schedule that will automatically locate the phone up to 5 times a day!  The system will send the parent an email (that you may be able to check on your mobile phone from anywhere) letting you know where your child is.  We located my son's kajeet phone 12 miles away in the Hardware store parking lot.  Without the GPS service, his phone would have never been located.
